Dr. Sunmee Huh, MD

The Asian Mental Health Clinic at Sun Psychiatry provides culturally-sensitive care centered around issues clients of AAPI heritage often struggle with.

Dr. Huh is a Harvard and Brown trained psychiatrist with a special interest in anxiety disorders and psychiatric and psychological issues that affect high performing individuals. She is passionate about providing support and care for clients who have had to manage the pressures no one else sees.

She attended Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School and subsequently the Adult Psychiatry residency at Harvard Medical School / Cambridge Health Alliance. While at Harvard, she was Chief Resident of the Outpatient Psychiatry Department. She supervised the psychodynamic therapy resident clinic and regularly gave core clerkship lectures on anxiety disorders to Harvard medical students. Dr. Huh worked as a cognitive behavioral (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapist at the Boston University Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders. She is a member of the Washington Psychiatric Society (WPS) and American Psychiatric Association (APA).

As a DMV native, Dr. Huh has firsthand experience with the ambitious and highly competitive culture that characterizes the region. After completing the International Baccalaureate program at Richard Montgomery High School, she attended the University of Maryland, College Park as a Banneker/Key Scholar and later worked as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health before pursuing medicine. She brings both personal insight and a clinical understanding to the challenges faced by high-performing students and professionals.

Approach

Trauma - Informed

Dr. Huh takes a trauma-informed approach to these psychological challenges that often cause suffering in high-performing patients: perfectionism, burnout, traumatic life events, intellectualization, workplace and familial expectations, navigating conflicting roles, and identity development.

Combined Treatment

Complementing psychiatry with psychotherapy is central to Dr. Huh’s practice, and treatment often includes a therapeutic component. She believes that meaningful psychiatric care begins with truly understanding each person’s story, values, and goals. She draws from evidence-based approaches, primarily utilizing psychodynamic therapy (identifying and addressing subconscious patterns of behavior). Dr. Huh supplements as appropriate with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), and the Unified Protocol approach to promote self efficacy.

Societal and cultural pressures can make it difficult to reach out for help when you are suffering. However, you do not have to go through this alone. I want to take a moment to congratulate you on taking this first step. I look forward to getting to know you and working together.
